the meaning of kit and caboodle

The phrase: "the whole kit and caboodle" means everything or the entire collection of something. It is often used informally to emphasize that nothing has been left out, and it refers to all the parts of a group or collection. 

Origin of the phrase: The expression is American in origin and developed in the mid-19th century. It is actually a redundant phrase because both "kit" and "caboodle" already mean a collection or a whole lot. 

  • Kit: This word's meaning developed over time. By the 1700s, it meant a soldier's collection of personal effects, or "necessaries". A soldier's "kit bag" contained all of his worldly possessions.

  • Caboodle: This word is believed to be a modification of the earlier term "boodle," which came from the Dutch word boedel, meaning "property" or "possessions". The "ca-" sound was likely added for alliteration to make the phrase more catchy.
